Choosing and Designing Your Wedding Cake
Home » Wedding Cake »
Your wedding cake is going to be the centerpiece of the reception. All of your guests will take much notice of the cake. An announcement is made for the bride and groom to cut the cake, and your guests surround you while music plays. The bride and groom feed each other the first piece, and then your guests have the opportunity to enjoy it as well. All of this occurs while snapshots are being taken of this special moment. When you decide what cake you will choose, remember the importance of it. It is not just cake!
Tradition calls for a cake topper such as the typical depiction of the bride and groom. Many couples decide to leave the topper off of their wedding cake, unless it was a family heirloom or tradition. If you decide a cake topper is appropriate, it can represent something that defines your relationship. Of course, the size of the cake and the amount of tiers on it will be decided by the amount of guests attending the reception. Design, style, flavor, color and icing choice should be considered next. Many choose the colors and style of their wedding, for the color and style of their cake. Does the bride like chocolate cake, and the groom vanilla? Choose a marble cake to fit the preference of both parties. Another option would be for each tier to have a different flavor cake. This would assure you that all guests would be happy.
If you have an idea already as to what type of wedding cake you want, make appointments with a few bakers. Meet with these, and look at photographs of their previous work. This will build your trust in their ability to bake you the best wedding cake, and the exact replica of what you have always pictured your wedding cake to be. A good idea would also be to have their shop bake a small replica for you to taste. This allows you to taste and see their work, as well as have an excuse to eat some cake! Tradition usually is to freeze the top layer of the wedding cake to enjoy again on your first anniversary. Today, more people freeze the top layer, and eat it when they return from their honeymoon. Doing this assures you of its freshness, and it just tastes than it would in a year. In fact, it gives you an excuse to buy a fresh cake on your first wedding anniversary!
